Thecontrol knob release was used with the unsealed fourball clutch. The control lever release can only be usedwith a sealed six ball clutch. This canbe determined by attempting to turn starter crankclockwise. If wound tight, release tension by placingcontrol knob or lever to "Start" position. If starter springdoes not release, place control at "Crank" position. Toprevent injury, hold crank handle with one hand whileremoving Phillips head screw and handle assembly fromstarter housing. This will release spring. Fig. 22.Fig. 22 - Releasing SpringBroken Spring, Windup StarterTo check starter for a broken spring, while unit is still onengine, place control knob or lever to "Start" position.Turn cranking handle ten turns clockwise. If engine doesnot turn over, either the spring is broken or the starterclutch balls are not engaged. While turning the crankinghandle, watch the starter clutch ratchet; if it does notmove the starter spring is probably broken.Disassemble WindupRemove blower housing.
