UNIT 1LESSON 4

TEMPERATURE

OVERVIEW Describe how temperature is measured and determine how the atmosphere is affected by temperature.

OUTLINE

Definition

Temperature Scales

Vertical Distribution

Heat Transfer

TEMPERATURE

One of the most important properties of the atmosphere is its ability to absorb and lose heat. The heating and cooling of the atmosphere exerts a tremendous influence on the processes that determine the weather. Consequently, tempera-ture is one of your principal concerns. It is necessary to know the meaning of temperature, the scales and instruments used in its measure-ment, and the important temperature values.

Procedures for observing temperature were dis-cussed in the AG3 rate training manual.

Learning Objective: Describe how temper-ature is measured and determine how the atmosphere is affected by temperature.

DEFINITION

Temperature may be regarded as a measure of molecular motion. Its intensity is determined from absolute zero (Kelvin scale), the point at which all molecular motion stops. Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness, or it may be considered as a measure of heat intensity.
