LAYING OFF A GIVEN DISTANCE.Frequently, a chaining party is required to lay off
a given distance and establish a new point on the
ground. This is measuring by using a known
distance on the tape and transferring it to
the ground. If the distance is greater than a
tape length, then the procedure described for
measuring a full tape length is followed for the

distances by the "breaking tape" method.
required number of full tape lengths. The
remaining partial tape length is then laid off by
setting the rear chainmans plumb bob at the
appropriate tape graduation.
